Jag gick nyligen med i en facebookgrupp som heter “The Historical Sew Fortnightly” vilken handlar om att utmana medlemmarna till att sy och hantverka historiskt. I år kommer det att vara 24 stycken utmaningar och jag och Tove har utmanat varandra till att försöka klara av åtminstone hälften. I och med att gruppen är internationell kommer mina inlägg hädanefter skrivas på både svenska och engelska, och jag ska göra mitt bästa för att skriva så bra som möjligt. Kanske går jag över till bara engelska så småningom – jag kan tänka mig att mina svenska läsare ändå kan engelska.
I recently joined a facebook group named “The Historical Sew Fortnightly” which goal is to challenge it’s members to sew and make historical things. This year it will be 24 challenges and my friend Tove and I have challenged eachother to try and make atleast 12 each. Since the group is international I will start writing in both Swedish and English. In the future I might write only in English – my guess is that my Swedish readers is fully capable to read English texts.
Årets första utmaning heter “Make do & mend” och uppmanar oss att städa lite i vår historiska garderob, laga lite eller sy något nytt av något gammalt. Jag har valt att börja enkelt och därför har jag gjort om en hätta jag inte varit särskilt nöjd med. Hättan sydde jag för ganska länge sedan, men redan från början insåg jag att jag inte var helt nöjd med den.
The first challenge of the year is called “Make do & Mend” and tell us to get our historical wardrobe in order by doing some cleaning up, mend something or sew something new of something old. I’ve chosen to start simple and therefore I have remade a hood that I wasn’t very pleased with. I made it quite a while ago and already from the start I realised that I wasn’t really happy with it.

The thing that made me not so very pleased with the hood was a construction error. I had made the pattern so it created points at the front by the buttoning and at the back by the seam. The buttons was not good either, they are cheap, Indian, brass buttons with lotus flowers on them. I was supposed to change them right away, but it never happened. Otherwise it’s a really good cap – both lining and the outer fabric is made of wool and it’s hand sewn with linen and silk.

Jag har alltså bara ändrat formen i nederkant på hättan mitt fram och mitt bak, samt gjort nya knappar i tyg. Jag har också förstärkt knapphålen med riktig knapphålssöm, innan hade jag bara kastat runt hålen. Nu är jag mycket mer nöjd med hättan. Jag funderar på att sälja den eftersom jag inte riktigt har tyckt att färgerna är representativa för min karaktär i min reenactmentgrupp och nu kan jag sälja den med mycket bättre samvete än innan.
I’ve only really changed the shape of the bottom edge of the hood and made new cloth buttons. I’ve also reinforced the buttonholes with proper buttonhole stiches, earlier I’d only whip stiched the holes. At the moment I am much more pleased with the hood. I am thinking about selling it since I haven’t thought that the colours fit my Living Histori-character, and now I can sell it with much better conscience.

The Challenge: #1 – Make do & Mend
Fabric: Wool.
Pattern: None, but it’s inspired by different extant hoods from the 14th century, except for the lack of gores.
Year: Late 14th century
Notions: Linen and purple silk thread for sewing.
How historically accurate is it? Except for the lack of gores, I would say it’s historically accurate. The binding seam is sewn with waxed linen thread and the seam allowances are sewn down with purple silk.
Hours to complete: About 5 hours.
First worn: For the pictures.
Total cost: None – all materal came from stash.
I’m so excited about this year and it’s upcoming sewing!
